There’s A Shyness That Takes Over Our Play

More from Shaun Derry after his side’s 2-0 defeat to Yeovil Town

Cambridge United’s lack of goals is creating a “shyness” in their players, according to Shaun Derry.

The U’s failed to make the most of their chances, particularly in the first half, against Yeovil Town and ultimately lost 2-0.

And for all of their domination in the opening period, once the Glovers took the lead through Nathan Smith, their first shot on target, the U’s never truly regained their rhythm.

And Derry said that it is symptomatic of his team that once they get hit by “killer blows” they retreat into their shells.

“I think that’s just evident over the past few weeks, when we get hit by them killer blows when we are on the front foot and don’t score the first goal and then get done on the counter, there’s a shyness that takes over our play,” he said

“I don’t see that creativity that I’ve seen earlier on the game that was shown today.

“I thought the first 45 minutes was a very good performance, it didn’t have the goals in it but it had the performance levels and the creativity and I thought the rotation was good and I thought players played on top of their game.

“And they score the first goal from – let’s get it right, they didn’t even had a shot on target on that point – and it was a hapless ball to the back post and we’ve not won the first header and not jumped on the second and the ball has ended up in the back of the net.

“I think we just lost a little bit of confidence at that point.”

And the challenge now for Derry, ahead of a congested fixture list against Lincoln City, Chesterfield, Grimsby and Notts County in the space of 11 days, is to get the players’ “mentality right.”

And he hopes, after six players were missing for the trip to Somerset, that he will finally have a few more bodies back on Friday night.

“I keep mentioning the mentality of players,” he said.

“You can be the most fantastic footballer but if you haven’t got the confidence and mentality right then you’re going to have a tough day and that’s what’s been happening too often to us.

“And like I say, I don’t want to make excuses, I’m not that guy, I’m not that guy to make excuses but you know the reasons are we are very much missing some big players and we need them back sooner rather than later.”
