He came to therapy describing symptoms of disrupted sleep, hopelessness and sadness. Harry is concerned because has been drinking more lately than he would like.
Harry is a perfectionist and has always struggled with anxiety over academics. He has done well in school most years but doesnat want to go anymore. He has one or two friends but not a very good social network. Both of his friends smoke pot. He wishes he could make more friends but doesnat really like to go out. He feels frequently very self conscious in front of people or afraid he might do something to embarrass himself.

It is perfectly acceptable to be anxious occasionally during social situations. This type of anxiety often helps us prepare for that situation. For example: practicing a speech before giving it in class; making sure you have enough money before going out on a date; etc. However, usual, expected, and normal social situations almost always provoke fear or anxiety in individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder. This fear or anxiety is way out of proportion to the situation. Someone with Social Anxiety Disorder often knows that his or her fears are unreasonable and that other people dont feel the same way.

Hear My Radio Interview On My New Project

Chandra is an 11-year-old girl in the fifth grade. According to her mother, Chandra has always been a quiet child. Although she has generally done well in school, this past year her grades have started to slip. She has also become more irritable and withdrawn. At school, Chandra will only sit with her two best friends whom she has known since preschool. She says she doesnt want to hangout with other girls at lunch or between classes because she is afraid she will do something embarrassing. This fear started after one of the popular girls teased Chandra about wearing the wrong jeans.

I can’t hold a proper conversation with other people not my age except for my parents and my brothers. I don’t care if I get fat or what. I can’t even convey what I want to say. I don’t like to got to parties cause I know I will not enjoy it. I hate presentations and I tend to over prepare cause I can’t talk impromptu. I have extreme stage fright. I can’t think properly in front of other people and I always make mistakes but if I am alone, I can do things properly.

I am often afraid others will notice my shortcomings, or find fault with me, or form an unfavorable opinion of me. When I am talking to someone, I am often distracted by wondering what they are thinking of me. I avoid speaking in class, at work meetings, or in group discussions for fear of being negatively evaluated. I often avoid social engagements, parties, weddings, conferences, etc. , and/or leave these events early due to my social discomfort. I am often afraid that people will notice that I am blushing, sweating, trembling, or showing other signs of anxiety.

Do you know a teenager who appears to be socially anxious? If so, review the list below and see if it describes the teenager about whom you are thinking.
Not all of these behaviors necessarily reflect SAD. If you recognize someone when reading this list, consider helping them seek further evaluation.
Teenagers with social anxiety disorder are at a disadvantage in all areas of life. Students with the disorder are also less likely to make friends and participate in extracurricular activities.
Often teenage SAD will go undetected because parents and teachers believe that the adolescent is just shy.
